Healing Trauma, Disease and Finding Your Purpose with Dr. Joe Tafur

With Dr. Joe Tafur, MD, Angela Sanchez Rioz and Wiler Noriega Rodrigues

July 29 - August 5, 2018

We are pleased and honored to announce a special retreat with shamanic practitioner, physician, and author Dr. Joe Tafur, M.D., July 29 – Aug 5, 2018, alongside Shipibo shamans Wiler Noriega Rodrigues and Angela Sanchez Rioz.

Dr. Tafur is a Colombian American family physician originally from Phoenix, Arizona. After completing his family medicine training at UCLA, Dr. Tafur spent two years in academic research at the UCSD Department of Psychiatry in a lab focused on mind-body medicine. After his research fellowship, over a period of 6 years, he lived and worked in the Peruvian Amazon at the traditional healing center Nihue Rao Centro Espiritual. There he trained in ayahuasca shamanism under master Shipibo shaman Ricardo Amaringo. He has also previously worked with Wiler Noriega Rodrigues and Angela Sanchez Rioz, the two shamans who will be holding ceremony with him at Soltara.

In his new book “The Fellowship of the River: A Medical Doctor’s Exploration into Traditional Amazonian Plant Medicine,” through a series of stories, Dr. Tafur shares his unique experience and integrative medical theories. Throughout this retreat, Dr. Tafur will dive deeply into the connection between the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual bodies, and how plant medicine in sacred ceremony can, from both a shamanic and scientific perspective, facilitating deep healing on all levels. Through a series of workshops as adjuncts to ayahuasca ceremony, participants will develop a science-based understanding of the mind-body connection and learn how spiritual healing can help us identify and heal the root causes of illness and dis-ease.

Join us for a week of integrative medicine work and deep spiritual healing, combining the time-honored practices of traditional Shipibo shamanism with Wiler Noriega Rodrigues and Angela Sanchez Rioz, alongside integrative workshops led by Dr. Tafur. These sessions are designed to help us understand the scientific basis of holistic healing, and how we can utilize this knowledge to get the most out of our journeys. This retreat is intended for those who are curious about bridging the gap between mind and body, head and heart, and science and spirituality, as we ground into a truly holistic approach to healing.

“With ayahuasca as our guide we can connect to and explore our world through a larger lens, from our hearts, our emotions, and our higher wisdom. Tradition and ceremony call us back to our roots and provide a foundation for building and deepening our spiritual practice.”
– Dr. Tafur

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU

We are called to serve medicine in sacred ceremony with integrity, humility, and compassion. By creating a safe space and working only with experienced, well-intentioned shamans and facilitators, we uphold the lessons of the medicines and build a foundation of mutual trust, authenticity, and respect. We are not gurus, preachers, or enlightened beings – our shamans are healers who humbly transmit the knowledge and healing energies of the plants, and our facilitators are devoted to helping guests face, process, and explore difficult experiences and emotions, handle projections, manage expectations, and surrender to the process. We strive to uphold the highest integrity in everything we do and be a beacon for responsible, safe, and ethical practices, such that our guests feel safe and supported to get the most out of their healing.

Angela Sanchez Rioz
Our master shaman, Angelita Sanchez Rioz, comes from a very small Shipibo community called San Francisco close to the Ucayali river, near Pucallpa. Before dedicating her life to the medicine she was an artisan who would sell her art around Peru, which she makes in her free time to reflect the essence of Shipibo culture. She has been working with the medicine for the last 8 years. Her shamanic path started when she met Wiler at a social reunion where they became friends and he encouraged her to start dieting with sacred plant medicines. She connected well with this path…

Wiler Noriega Rodrigues
Our master shaman, Wiler Noriega Rodrigues, is 42 years old and originally from the Shipibo culture. He has been practicing with the medicine for the last 22 years. He started dieting mapacho (wild jungle tobacco) when he was 20 years old due to a fishing accident that took the vision from one of his eyes. In this way he was opened up to the world of plant medicine, and from that moment on has dedicated his life to learning from and working with them, and applying this knowledge to the healing of others. He was born in a small community on…
